Lot Essay

Auguste-Nicolas Cain (d.1894) was one of the foremost Animaliers of the second half of the 19th century. These candelabra represent a novel application of animalier principals but such decorative objects are rare because the cost of casting and chasing the numerous component parts was prohibitively high in a market which favoured naturalistic bronze groups or sporting subjects.
