Comprising: a large lozenge-shaped mirrored surtout de table with a raised bowl on stand; a pair of conforming dishes on stands; and a pair of six-light candelabra; each decorated overall with hieroglyphics, representing the sky-god Horus and with falcons, sphinxes and pharaohonic masks, variously hallmarked and numbered

Lot Essay

The 19th century European fascination with ancient Egypt had been ongoing since Napoleon's invasion of North Africa. But the colourfully exotic taste that we think of as the Egyptian Revival had its beginnings in the 1860s and the style was propelled during the 1876 exhibition when a temple façade at the Egyptian court drew national attention. Before then, the production of Elkington & Co., the renowned silver company from Birmingham, had been a mixture of historical, classical and mythological designs, making the step to the exotic yet classical Egyptian-revival style a natural one, with exceptional designs, such as the present lot, as a result.
