Linke's numbering system, perfected in the late 1890s and such a unique tool in researching and dating his work, is notoriously unreliable in the late 1880s when this cabinet was first conceived. The present lot, in a French Louis XV/XVI or Transitional style, was followed closely by a similar model of more typical Louis XV inspiration with shaped sides. The first clear entry is for one cabinet only in the Blue daybook number 1-390, where it is titled as Bibliothèque pour Jansen. At the time Jansen was becoming one of the most celebrated decorators in Paris and had also just taken over the cabinetmakers plans and master models of Linke's mentor, Zwiener. Futher examples were made in 1902, 1909, and the last in 1922.
