As in other works from this series, Goya is at pains to represent the figures as soldiers of indeterminate origin - they are obviously cavalry, but whether French or Spanish is not clear. The blank area to the right depicts the impact of an artillery shell, the blinding flash consuming and dematerialising the soldiers caught in its blast.
