etching with drypoint and engraving, circa 1810, Harris's state I ii, an exceptionally rare working proof before letters and numbers (Harris records six other examples, five in public collections), a fine impression, on heavy laid paper watermarked SERRA, with wide margins, the number 13 in pen and ink in the upper right corner, the artist's name and a price (5/-) in pencil in the lower margin, pale scattered foxing in the margin at left, one or two spots elsewhere, minor creasing in the left margin (probably produced by the press)

Lot Essay

The gesture of the standing officer has been interpreted either as a warning to the other soldiers that the enemy is approaching and that there 'isn't time' for rape, or as an attempt by a beleagured officer to impose discipline in response to the desperate pleas of the women.
