Lot Essay

De Gheyn's portrait shows the Dutch humanist, theologian and one of the founders of natural rights theory, Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), at the age of 15. It was Grotius who wrote the eulogy on Jan Uytenbogaert, printed underneath this present work by Rembrandt.
