The present work is closely related in subject to Pissarro's painting La Barrière du Chemin de Fer, aux Pâtis près Pontoise, 1873-4 (Phillips Family Collection, Wildenstein cat. no. 306). The painting shows precisely the same scene of the two peasants in front of the level crossing, but from a more distant viewpoint.
