Very finely carved with the long flowing folds of his sanghati elegantly draped across his shoulders, the face with a benign expression with eyes downcast in a meditative expression, the surface with a fine polish

Lot Essay

This piece featured as cat. no. 1 in an exhibition held by Seibu Department store in Tokyo in 1982 highlighting Gandharan art, that further included some pieces formerly in the collection of Andre Malraux. The current piece was in the collection of the Japanese potter Banura Shiro and of the artist Kayama Matazo.
This life-size sculpture is exceptionally well executed with long flowing folds of the drapery and serenely noble expression with incised pupils.
