**An ivory dagger grip in the form of a Makara
India, Deccan, late 17th century
With bared teeth and protruding tongue, the snout curled back, eyes inlaid, and the hair and mane carved in thick curls, the ends of the guard and its intersection with the grip decorated with an eight-petalled flower
