Karatsu Ware, Painted-Karatsu (E-Garatsu) type, Momoyama period (early 17th century)
The wide bowl set on a short ring foot and formed with slanted walls, shoe-shaped, and with a tall rim slightly overhanging the body, the body painted with a fence and miscanthus grass in rich chocolate-brown iron oxide covered with a transparent glaze of feldspar and ash, the iron oxide appearing bluish-black where the glaze is thin, repairs of black and red lacquer to rim chips in three places
