Lot Essay

This dresser base is of a distinctive design, with pronounced upward shaping to the frieze and refined turnings to the front legs. Dressers of this type, all of which were made with shelves originally, form a group in which some examples were plain along their fronts and others were inlaid with a flowing line with tulip shaped ends, an example of which is held in the National Museum of Wales collection at St Fagans, Cardiff. Present research suggests that this dresser base, in common with others of its type, originated on the Gower Penninsular, South Wales.
