Lot Essay

The original design for these chairs was sketched in a letter from Pugin to J.G Crace around November 1850. Originally intended for use in the House of Commons lobbies, they were made in large numbers by Gillow and by Holland & Sons, and were subsequently deployed also in Commons libraries, committee rooms and offices.
