Rosa Bonheur's accomplished and recognised abilities in representing animals in natural poses and settings were further re-inforced after a visit to the Scottish highlands in 1856. On that trip she made several studies of cattle and the model for this bronze is probably a result of those. She is more well known for her paintings of animals though, which inspired her brother Isidore Jules Bonheur in his sculpture.
