Lot Essay

Valton studied under both Barye and Fremiet, and was a successful exhibitor at the Salon between 1868 to 1914, winning several medals. This St. Bernard dog group, was also conceived as a single subject and exhibited at the Salon in 1881. See Christopher Payne, Animals in Bronze, Woodbridge 1988, page 237, fig. D101.
