Prix de Rome en 1676 et 1678, Chéron voyagea ensuite en Italie jusqu'en 1686 environ et afficha clairement sa préférence pour l'oeuvre de Raphaël, comme le rappelle Dezallier d'Argenville dans son Supplément à L'Abrégé de la vie des plus fameux peintres, 3ème partie, 1752, p. 256: 'Quand on lui demandait qui était son maître, il nommait Raphaël et Jules Romain'.
