Stonewares were made in various parts of China other than Yixing, although many are often mistakenly attributed to Yixing, as this bottle might have been without its identifying seals. About half a dozen of these Shouzhou black stoneware bottles are known, nearly all of which are decorated with repeated designs created by using small die-stamps which were pressed into the clay before it was fired. There is a Shouzhou in Anhui province, although it may not be the only place to have borne the name in the Qing dynasty. This bottle appears to be the only one recorded so far that identifies both the place of manufacture and the name of the maker.
