Galatea

Laurent-Honoré Marqueste, a student of Jouffroy and Falguière, won the Prix de Rome in 1871. He debuted at the Paris Salon with Jacob et l'Ange which won him a third place medal. His early success was followed by an equally impressive series of medals and accomplishments. At the Paris Salon he won a first place medal in 1876, and a second place medal in 1878, followed by a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and the grand prize at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. He was also decorated with the Légion d'honneur in 1884 and was appointed an officer in 1903.

An exquisite white marble composition by Laurent-Honore Marqueste entitled Persée et la Gorgone is in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, and another marble statue entitled Amor is in the collection of the Glyptotek in Copenhagen. In 1904 Marqueste executed a statue of Severn Teackle Wallis, which was subsequently erected in Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore, Maryland.
