Lot Essay

Walter Dendy Sadler studied at Heatherly's Art School in London and then joined myriad other artists in Dusseldorf where he joined the atelier of Wilhelm Simmler. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1873 as well as the Grosvenor Gallery and the Society for British Artists, Suffolk Street.

Sadler specialized in costume pieces of the 18th or early 19th Centuries, often with humorous themes. His pictures were immensely popular during his lifetime, and were much-reproduced through engravings.
