Born in Grimbergen in 1858, Fernand Khnopff was first drawn to the law as a career, but later became a student of Xavier Mellery at the Academy in Brussels. The artist soon moved on to Paris to study with the Academic artist Jules Lefebvre, and while in Paris, was attracted to the work of the Symbolist artists through the influence of the English Pre-Raphaelite painters. Khnopff was heavily influenced by his friends Burne-Jones and Gustave Moreau.
Khnopff was also an art critic, and wrote many articles on contemporaries which were published in The Studio, an English magazine very popular at the time.
