Lot Essay

There is a commode dating to the same period illustrated on pages 649-651 of The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Furniture II by Peter Hughes. The overall form is closely related and the première-partie and contra-partie Bérainesque top and side panels are almost identical except for the central scene to the top, which in the current example features a figure holding a bird in one hand and a bow in the other.
