According to Angela Caròla-Perrotti, the present group, a model by Giuseppe Gricci, was likely made during the years the factory was transitioning between Capodimonte near Naples and Buen Retiro in Spain.

Lot Essay

Of the fifteen Capodimonte figure groups modeled by Giuseppe Gricci collected by the Pfluegers, all but the present example was part of the bequest to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The privately printed catalogue of the Collection includes an article on these figures written by Angela Caròla-Perrotti which discusses the importance of the sculptor and the sources for his inspiration, all of his subjects being traceable to 17th and 18th century master paintings.
