Lot Essay

The present sauceboat and stand is one of two made for a service described in the manufacturer's records as Service Guirlande de Roses sold to the marchand mercier Madame Lefebvre at a cost of 144 livres. As was the custom, Mme. Lefebvre received as trade discount of 12 on the cost of the entire service. Liance is noted as having painted one of the sauceboats and both stands; Denis Levé the second sauceboat noted as 'cancelled' in the inventory.

François Baudouin père is recorded at Sèvres as a gilder, 1750-1800; Martin-Antoine Liance fils aîné as a flower painter 1791-1799 using the unconfirmed mark 'L.C.'.
