Lot Essay

With its neoclassical outline and their distinctive shaped backs this pair of chairs form a fine example of West German furniture in the late 18th Century. A closely related set in the manner of the workshop of David Roentgen is illustrated in W. Eller, Möbel des Klassizismus, Louis XVI und Empire, München, 2002, pl. 306, another related chair, now in the exhibition of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, is illustrated in H. Schmitz, Deutsche Möbel des Klassizismus, Stuttgart, 1923, p. 90.
