On three ball and claw feet, the cylindrical body finely nielloed with a bridge, a house with sailingboat and a house in landscape, each amongst scrolling foliage and bunches of flowers, the scroll handle covered with foliage, the low domed and flat hinged cover centred by a classical ruin with columns and three oval medallions each with houses in landscapes, scrolling foliage bands, reeded ball thumbpiece, marked on base

Lot Essay

Cornelius Poppe born in Hamburg in circa 1650 and died in Augsburg in 1723. Poppe was known for his excellent niello work and one of the few makers who mastered this technique.
