GERMAN SCHOOL, CIRCA 1745/55
A young princess seated on a blue upholstered gilt-wood chair at a
marble and gilt-wood table, with her left elbow resting on a blue
velvet cushion with gold tassel beside a princely crown, in
lace-bordered orange dress with jewelled bodice and ruffled lace
sleeves, ermine-lined red velvet cloak with jewelled clasp draped over her shoulders, jewelled drop earrings and matching crown in her upswept and curled powdered hair, triple pearl bracelets; interior background with column and gold-tasseled green velvet drapery
ormolu frame with reeded borders and ribbon-tie surmount
rectangular, 2 3/16 x 2 15/16 in. (55 x 75 mm.)

Whilst the identification of the sitter as Marie-Josèphe of Saxony, Dauphine of France, can be excluded, the sitter may be a member of the houses of Baden or Württemberg or of one of the northern German houses such as Mecklenburg or Oldenburg.
