The robust interpretation of the Gothic revival style of these pedestals possibly points to a German origin. Tables and seat furniture of a similar spirit, several executed by the antiquarian Munich furniture maker Franz Fortner, are illustrated in H. Kreisel, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1973, vol. III, figs. 613-624.
