Lot Essay

This charming small commode is undoubtedly inspired by the exuberant rococo furniture designs of the Flemish architecte-dessinateur François Cuvilliés (1695-1768), who was brought to the royal court of Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria to supply boiseries and furnishings. A related commode in the Residenz, Munich, with similar low relief rocailles and outset pierced angles, is illustrated in H. Kreisel, Die Kunst des Deutshen Möbels, 1970, vol. II, fig. 447.
