OF REGENCY STYLE, SECOND HALF 20TH CENTURY
Of oval sarcophagus form with twin serpentine entwined handles on foliate paw feet, with acanthus lidded pots flanking a square cover
10¾in. (27.3cm.) wide
Together with a Charles X gilt-bronze inkwell, probably Palais Royal, the cylindrical body surmounted by a cover with a kneeling cupid, the naturalistic base cast with bow and arrow, the interior fitted with later associated wells (2)

Lot Essay

The sarcophagus inkstand is created in the French/antique manner as a Roman bath and the form derives in particular from the Aldobrandini 'Antique bathing Vase' illustrated in Charles Tatham's, Etchings ... of Ancient Ornamental Architecture, 1799.
