Lot Essay

This massive bust was conceived, along with a plaster example, circa 1858. According to a contemporary sale catalogue marked by Robert Wenley, currently preserved at the Wallace Collection, London, a bust of the same description as the present lot - likely the exact one - was sold to a J. Walker for £55.13, together with a pendant "Femme Grecque de Missolonghi" (Greek woman of Missolonghi), at Cordier's London sale on 8 May 1861, no. 38.
