Originally conceived and later executed as a supporting element to Génie de la Danse for the façade of Charles Garnier's Opéra, the full-length version of La Bacchante aux Roses was first cast in plaster in 1868. Since the endeavor cost Carpeaux considerably more than planned, the artist started marketing reductions in bronze, terracotta and marble in various lengths, the present example being one of the more popular.
