THE CRYSTALLINE DECORATION ON THIS PAIR IS POSSIBLE DUE TO TWO MAJOR TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS MADE AT SèVRES, CIRCA 1880. THE FIRST WAS THE INTRODUCTION OF NEW HARD-PASTE BY GEORGES VOGT AND CHARLES LAUTH. BY ADDING A STRONG MEASURE OF QUARTZ THE NEW BODY COULD BE SUCCESSFULLY FIRED AT A MUCH LOWER TEMPERATURE. AT THIS LOWER TEMPERATURE THE ZINC OXIDE REACTION REQUIRED FOR THIS TECHNIQUE COULD BE MUCH BETTER CONTROLLED. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ALEXANDRE SANDIER, ARTISANS TO EMBRACE THE REVOLUTIONARLY CRYSTALLINE EFFECT INCLUDED: TAXILE DOAT, LOUIS KAHN AND HECTOR GUIMARD. MOST SèVRES VASES EMPLOYING THIS TECHNIQUE WERE SMALL MAKING IT LIKELY THAT THE PRESENT PAIR WERE MADE FOR PUBLIC DISPLAY. THE BRONZE MOUNTS WERE ALSO LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN DESIGNED AT SèVRES.
