The vase was part of the furnishings of the Estonian country house of an officer, and later minister, of the Imperial Russian Navy under Tsars Nicholas I and Alexander II.

The Batenin Factory produced porcelain of high quality from the second decade of the 19th century until its destruction by fire in 1839. The factory specialized in ornate gilded works with a variety of painted decorations, including views of St. Petersburg.
