A cinnabar lacquer five-piece altar garniture
19th century
Comprising a tripod incense burner and cover on a wood stand, a pair of two-handled baluster vases and a pair of pricket candlesticks, the burner with three cabriole legs, arched handles and a petal collar, the domed cover headed by a buddhist lion finial, sitting with its paw grasping a ball, scrolling lotus around the feet, handles, collar and cover, the body decorated with a continuous scene depicting scholars and their attendents within a rocky landscape, the baluster vases with loose rings suspended from loop handles, the body decorated with lobed medallions depicting scholars in a garden setting and flower sprays, the candlesticks with high domed base, knobbed stem, broad drip-pan and cylindrical shaft, all decorated with scrolling lotus, the lacquer on a metal base, one vase slightly bent
