Lot Essay

The story of Shide and his friend Hanshan has been a beloved theme of Chinese and Japanese painters. Hanshan was an eccentric poet-monk who lived in Tiantai in the province of Zhejiang. Shide was the cook-monk of the Guoqingshi convent in Tiantai, and Hanshan's friend. From the Song dynasty onwards they appear in paintings as a pair of wild-haired young monks; Zanshan usually carrying a handscroll, while Shide carries a broom.
