A LARGE COLLECTION OF COPTIC TEXTILE FRAGMENTS
CIRCA 3RD-8TH CENTURY A.D.
Mostly clavi and roundels from tunics, including: tunic fragment with tasselled border, woven in dark purple with a scrolling foliate motif; fragment in dark blue with fine cream coloured embroidered geometric patterns; several long clavi fragments woven in dark purple with various animals within scrolling foliate roundels; a long panel woven in bright blues, reds and greens with stylized fruit and flowers; and two fragments of knotted linen probably from hair nets, some framed and glazed(a lot)
25 in. (63.5 cm.) long max.
Provenance
Six fragments sold Christie's London, 27 April 1976, lots 91 and 92 (part lots).
