Lot Essay

Accompanied by Breguet green fitted leather-covered box.

Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823) was a master watchmaker known for his original technical advances and skilled design. His long list of clientele included among others Marie-Antoinette, Emperor Napoleon and King George III. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, repeating pocketwatches were fashionable and a Breguet repeater was the height of technical sophistication. The present watch repeats on a single gong hit by one hammer. The use of the gong replaced earlier repeating mechanisms in which the hammer struck the watch case making an indistinct dull sound while the gong created a clear tone. The gong also allowed for a thinner case giving the watch a more refined elegant appearance.
