Lot Essay
Accompanied by an Extract from the Patek Philippe Archives confirming the date of manufacture as 1963 and its subsequent sale on December 6th of the same year.
This watch is thought to be the only example of a reference 2597 fitted with a gilt sunburst-finished dial of approximately a total of 75 pieces produced in yellow gold. It appears to have been originally sold by Lane Crawford, the renowned Hong Kong jewelers and retailers, who supplied the gold bracelet. The ensemble has a typical modernistic look, lesser known on this reference, but generally found in watches from the 1960s.
Patek Philippe commenced production of the reference 2597 with movement caliber 12-400 HS, for heures sautantes or jumping hours, in 1958. This model's movement derived from Louis Cottier's prototype of 1953, patented by Patek Philippe in 1959. From 1958 until 1962 Cottier was provided with 90 movements, of the calibers 12-400, 12-400 AM and 27-400 AM, to modify with his world time setting function.
The reference 2597 was made in two versions; the first features an independently adjustable hour hand whereas the second, introduced in 1962, includes an additional hour hand. According to record Patek Philippe retailed the two-hand version until 1975. The mechanism came to inspire the modern "Travel Time" wristwatch, the reference 5034. For an example of this modern model see lot 179 in this sale.
For a similar example of the reference 2597 see Huber & Banbery, Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Volume 2, Second Edition, pp. 238 & 239.
