Harry Winston commenced production of the Project Z series with the Z1 in 2004 and made a total of 100 pieces. Prior to its introduction, the material Zalium, patented by Ronald Winston, had been reserved for use in the aerospace industry and for surgical tools. Here adapted in to this unusual and lovely case, with the design inspired by the arches of Winston's salon in New York, zalium is a zirconium-based alloy that is reportedly harder than titanium. Zalium is difficult to work with and must be machined from an ingot. Zalium dust is also very flammable.
