BELLIN, Jacques Nicolas (1703-1772). Observations sur la carte du Golphe du Mexique, et des Isles de l'Amérique, dressée au Dépôt des Cartes, Plans & Journaux de la Marine, pour la service des vaisseaux du Roi. [Paris, 1749].
4o (240 x 180 mm). 17 pages. Modern calf.
FIRST EDITION. Jacques Nicolas Bellin was royal hydrographer and ingénieur géographe de la marine et du Dépot des Cartes et Plans, beginning in 1721. Bellin's treatise on Gulf Navigation and the explication of his map of the Gulf and Caribbean is notable for its harsh treatment of Henry Popple's map of North America. The memoirs relating to his variously published maps were issued separately, as here for his important map of the Gulf of Mexico. They were later collected and published in his Recueil des mémoires... These separately issued memoirs are quite scarce. Alden & Landis 749/24. See Sabin 4556.
