COLSON, Nathaniel (fl 1674). The Mariners New Kalendar. Containing the Principles of Arithmetick and Geometry Together with Exact Tables Also the Description and use of the Sea-Quadrant The Problems of Plain Sailing A Rutter for the Coasts of England, Scotland, Ireland, France, &c. London: J. Darby for W. W Fisher, 1682.
4o (188 x 147 mm). Woodcut illustrations and diagrams. (Some minor staining, a small paper flaw to H2 affecting a few letters.) Contemporary calf (covers slightly bowning, light rubbing to joints). Provenance: Mr. Joseph Irving (ownership inscription "his book August 12 1753" on front free endpaper); Susanna Williamson (ownership inscription "Her Book" dated 1761 on front free endpaper); J.S. Marriott (signature, dated 1808 on title); Harrison D. Horblit (bookplate; his sale part I, Sotheby's London, 10 June 1974, lot 233).
Fourth edition. Colson, a student of mathematics, provides in his Mariners new Kalender essential tables and instructions in navigation. "The work was in fact a nautical manuel, and Matthew Norwood complained that Colson had plagiarized his fathers works" (Taylor). (See lot 391.) VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only one other copy of the six editions published before the end of the century has sold in the past 25 years.
