8o (188 x 115 mm). Engraved title, 15 engraved plates and maps (two folding), by Van der Gucht after drawings by Froger (light browning, plate facing p.120 with clean tear crossing image). Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked). Provenance: John Sneyd, Bishton, Staffordshire (engraved bookplate).

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of a popular account of an unsuccessful French military voyage to establish a claim to the Straits of Magellan. The six-ship flotilla "called at Rio de Janeiro and continued on to the Straits. But shortage of food in the midst of the Straits decided their return. They put in at Cabo Frio, Bahia, Cayenne, pirated in the Antilles... and returned to La Rochelle" (Borba de Moraes). The plates include maps of the River Gambia, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, views of indigenous peoples, exotic fruits, birds, fish and mammals.
