The artist received his artistic training in his native Geneva. From 1757 to 1759 he travelled in Italy. From 1761 he settled in Germany. Stöcklin's oeuvre consists of church interiors and landscapes. The staffage in most of his church interiors is the work of Johann Ludwig Ernst Morgenstern (1738-1819)
