FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. In 1811, Golovnin, a Russian naval lieutenant, landed on Kunashiri Island, where he was arrested by the Bakufu and imprisoned for 2 years. His release was eventually negotiated by Captain Rikord, who sailed to Japan on the Russian sloop-of-war Diana, taking on board a number of Japanese seamen shipwrecked off the coast of Kamchatka and capturing the captain and several crew from a large junk along the way. Golovnin's narrative describes his years in captivity, as well as early observations of life in Japan. Cordier Japonica 465. (2)
