KING, Captain Phillip Parker (1793-1856). Narrative of a Survey of the intertropical and western Coasts of Australia, performed between the years 1818 and 1822. London: John Murray, 1827.
2 volumes, 8o (225 x 142 mm). Half-titles, 2 folding engraved maps and 13 plates (one folding), illustrations in the text, final imprint leaf in vol.II. (A few leaves spotted.) Original gray boards, printed paper spine labels, uncut (some wear to corners and joints, minor chipping to labels); quarter morocco folding case.
FIRST EDITION, second issue (first issue has title dated 1826, of which only very few copies are known). "An extremely important work" (Hill). In 1817 the Australian-born Phillip Parker King, took command of Flinders's interrupted survey of the western, northwestern, and northeastern coasts of Australia "and laid down a new route from Sydney to Torres Strait, inside the Great Barrier Reef" (Hill). "King's book is an essential inclusion in any collection of books relating to Australian coastal discovery. His book is keenly sought and it would enhance any collection" (Wantrup p.162). Volume II includes a chapter on the natural history of the territory, including sections on birds, reptiles, fish, botany, and geology.
