KOTZEBUE, Otto von (1787-1846). A Voyage of Discovery into the South Sea and Beering's Straits, for the purpose of exploring a North-East Passage, undertaken in the years 1815-1818, at the expense of His Highness the Chancellor of the Empire, Count Romanzoff, in the Ship Rurick. 3 volumes, 8o (224 x 145 mm). Half-titles, list of plates, 7 charts (4 folding), 8 hand-colored aquatint plates, and one uncolored plate (some slight spotting and paper discoloration). Original boards, uncut (rebacked preserving original spines and spine labels, some rubbing, chipping to spine labels); cloth folding case. Provenance: Dropmore (pencil inscription), presumably the library of Lord William Wyndham Grenville (1759-1834, Prime Minister); Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate; his sale part VI, Parke-Bernet, 22 April 1969, lot 3512; purchased from Henry Stevens, 1941).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF KOTZEBUE'S FIRST VOYAGE. Kotzebue details the second Russian circumnavigation, and this English edition includes plates and maps not in the first Russian edition of 1821-1823. The expedition in the ship Rurick commanded by von Kotzebue, and sponsored by Count Romanzoff, sailed to Brazil, stopping at Rio de Janeiro, then went by way of Cape Horn to Chile, Tahiti, Pitcairn, and Radack, to Kamtchatka. The return was made via New Archangel, California, Hawaii, Marianas, Philippines, and St. Helena. Excellent charts were completed of the North Pacific coasts of Asia and America, the Aleutians, Pribilofs, St. Lawrence Island, and the Bering Strait where Kotzebue Sound was discovered.
