FIRST EDITION. Ludlam made his observation in the observatory of St. John's College in Cambridge. He "enjoyed a considerable reputation at the time for his skill in practical mechanics and astronomy, as well as for his mathematical lectures. In 1765 he was a member of the committee of outside experts appointed by the board of longitude to examine John Harrison's fourth chronometer" (DNB).
