MEDINA, Pedro de (1493-1567). Regimento de navegacion. En que contienen las reglas, declaraciones y avisos del libro del arte de navegar. Seville: Juan Canalla, 1552.
8o (234 x 164 mm). Printed in red and black. Woodcut title vignette of a ship, double-page woodcut map of the Atlantic Ocean with adjacent coasts of North and South America, Europe and Africa in red and black, six sections of text each with separate title with woodcut illustrations, 10 woodcut diagrams and illustrations in text (including two maps on b2v-b3r printed in red and black). (Title with small marginal repair, a few short tears to approximately 6 leaves, a few crossing text, some pale dampstaining.) 18th-century vellum over pasteboard (rebacked to match); quarter brown morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION. Medina's work was intended for ship-born pilots rather than study on land and Drake carried a copy during his circumnavigation. The map had first appeared in his 1545 work, though there appeared a second woodcut which was printed below the American half which extended coverage to the Straits of Megellan. The map also appeared in Martin Cortés's Breve compendio of 1551 (see lot 125). See Burden 14.
VERY RARE: Alden & Landis locates only the Yale and NYPL copies. According to American Book Prices Current, only one copy has sold at auction in the last 30 years: Sotheby's New York, 31 October 1985, lot 22. Alden & Landis 552/31; Borba de Moraes II:549; Medina 159666; D.W. Waters, The Art of Navigation in England in Elizabethan and Early Stuart Times, New Haven, 1958, p.163. Not in Church, JCB or Sabin.
