Utica, N.Y.: for the Author, 1804.
8o (212 x 127 mm). Errata leaf. (Some browning, light dampstaining at beginning and end.) 19th-century quarter sheep, blue boards (some light rubbing to edges, minor staining).
VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the first book printed in Utica, New York, doubtless by Merrell and Seward, of Moulton's adventures and voyage to make his fortune in the American fur trade with China. The author and crew of the sealer Onico suffered great hardship and indignities from the ship's master, George Howe, and the first mate who abandoned the mutinous crew on Juan Fernandez Island. "The account includes interesting observations on the history, geography, climate, and natural history of the places visited in addition to numerous documents pertaining to the events and accounts of the sealing activities" (Hill 1193). Howes M-863; See Howgego F53; Sabin 51136.
