Lot Essay

The identity of the artist was first established by B. Haak, Gerrit van Vucht, een stillevenschilder te Schiedam, in Oud Holland, LXXII, 1957, pp. 115/121. He showed that the painter was mentioned in the 'Schildersregister' by Jan Sysmus, drawn up between 1669 and 1678. The present lot is characteristic of his oeuvre, which consisted mostly vanitas still lifes on a small format and in light colours which are to be related to the Leyden School of still life painters
