AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY LINKING TWO OF THE GREATEST SIXTEENTH-CENTURY MATHEMATICIANS, NUÑEZ AND DIGGES

FIRST EDITION. Nuñez, the greatest Portuguese mathematician of the sixteenth century, was born in Alcácer do Sol, Portugal and studied at Salamanca, and in 1524 or 1525 at Lisbon. He was appointed royal cosmographer in 1529. He held a professorship in Lisbon, which was moved to Coimbra in 1537. He taught Clavius, Nicolaus Coelho de Amaral, Manuel de Figueredo and Joao de Castro, one of the greatest Portuguese navigators. "Considered the greatest of Portuguese mathematicians, Nunez reveals in his discoveries, theories, and publications that he was a first-rate geographer, physicist, cosmologist, geometer and algebraist" (DSB). The edition was divided between the heirs of Birckman and the heirs of Johann Steelsius.

THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY, FROM THE LIBRARY OF THOMAS DIGGES, who was one of the most important English mathematicians of the 16th century. He wrote several important books on mathematics, surveying, and ballistics. In his Alae sue scalae mathematicae, published in 1573, Digges describes and illustrates the diagonal scale, which was based on the Nonius, invented by Nuñez and first described by him in 1542. Adams N-373; Belgica typographia 2225; Palau 196753; Peeters-Fontainas 845.
